Detective Inspector John Rebus is nearing retirement in late autumn Edinburgh when a murder case disrupts his plans. A dissident Russian poet is found dead, initially appearing to be a mugging gone wrong. Coincidentally, a delegation of Russian businessmen is visiting, and there’s pressure to resolve the case quickly. However, as Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke investigate, they suspect it’s more than a random attack, especially after a second murder occurs. Complicating matters, Rebus becomes implicated in an assault on a local gangster. With just days left in his career, he questions whether he’ll make it to retirement at all.
